Preparing for cover
| Always be ready to respond |
| When 'on cover' please be
ready to respond at a moments notice. If you are scheduled to hold the scheme's mobile
phone (i.e. a * appears next to your name on the online rota) ensure that you
collect it in good time from the work surface on the right hand side as you
enter the porters' kiosk in Fulton House (or from the previous holder) and
sign on with ambulance control (the numbers in the phone's memory); Give
them our scheme name (i.e. Swansea University First Responders - call sign
933), tell them your
name and that of your partner and give your PINs. State the time your cover
ends and ensure they know to contact you on the scheme's mobile phone. Keep
the phone with you at all times.
Handing over the phone at 1pm each day: Phone the person who is due to take it for the afternoon session to confirm the time you’ll take it to Fulton House (or directly to him/her). We want to avoid leaving the campus without cover so if you cannot make contact keep the phone with you and phone the Fulton House porters (ext. 4271 or 4713). Ask them to let the next responder know, when he/she turns up, that you still have the phone and to contact you to arrange the hand-over. If time goes on and you hear nothing contact Liz or Helen and they will try to arrange alternative cover. After contacting ambulance control phone your partner to let him or her know that you are now on cover. All first responders extension numbers and personal mobile phone numbers are stored in the scheme's mobile phone memory. If you cannot contact your partner (shown on the online rota) contact another member of the team and ask if he/she will be prepared to cover with you. Try phoning Cathy initially. If you are not holding the scheme's mobile phone your partner will inform you of a call by phoning you on your extension or personal mobile phone. If you can't be near your office phone ensure that you have your mobile phone with you at all times - and that it's switched on! Ensure that you have your staff card and kit cabinet key with you when on call. The staff card will give you access to all the external doors on campus with the exception of the halls of residence. If for any reason you know you won't be able to respond during any part of your shift please contact your partner so that he/she is aware of the situation. |
| When you get a call |
| Make a note of the location of the casualty and any other details ambulance control may give you. Also note the time of their call. Contact your partner and pass on the information. Decide who will collect a kit from the most convenient cabinet then meet up at the scene. |
|
At the end of your cover |
| At the end of each period of cover it is the responsibility of the holder of the scheme's mobile phone to pass it on to the next responder on the rota marked with an * on the online rota. Either return the phone to the desk at Fulton House (Plug it into the charger cable on the worksurface on the right hand side as you enter the porters' kiosk door) or pass it on in person if that's more convenient. |
