The recent refresher training session (first of two) went very well with all agreeing that it
was a worthwhile exercise, especially the new format for dealing with a
casualty requiring CPR (which will be discussed at the next business
meeting this coming Friday). All team members attending have received their
Violence & Aggression books which must be completed within the next moth
or so and handed to Jerry, who will send them on to Steve. We had to
postpone the second session due to the snow but Jerry is trying to rearrange
this for April. BHF needs your help! Watch Your Own Heart Attack, the 2 minute advert screened at 9:17pm on August 10th 2008 to raise awareness of heart attack symptoms has been shortlisted by Film4 as one of the Top 12 advertisements of 2008. The winner will be determined by the ad which receives the largest number of online votes before Thursday 29th January at the Channel 4 website: http://www.channel4.com/film/advertorial/ads/. |

| Monday 03/11/08 | First of the bi-monthly training sessions took place in room 703. Jerry, Diane, Jane, Geraint and Mike were able to practice CPR, using the BVM and the training AED. | |
| Monday 11/08/08 |
Our training AED has arrived at last! If acceptable, we could devote most of the time in next month’s meeting (1st September) to practicing rescue scenarios with the training AED and “Brad”. |
|
| Thursday 26/06/08 | Please note that the regular monthly meeting in July (scheduled for the 7th July) has been cancelled. | |

A meeting was held in the library to decide on the shape
of the revised rota. It had to be re-jigged because Ross and James have left
the university and Owen will do so soon. We are very grateful to all of them
for their valuable support over the past year or so. Christine is still on
long-term sick leave and Ana is on a long secondment away from the
university. Geraint’s shifts don’t allow him to cover his usual shift for
the next few weeks and Syed currently spends one week in two at
Hendrefoilan. Richard is still not available to respond and it looks like
Helen and Kemi won’t be joining the rota. Although Amy has received training
she must now wait (3-5 months?) for her occupational health and CRB checks.
All of this means that tweaking the old rota to fit was causing Jerry problems on a daily basis. It was decided to change the rota to include full-time
9-5 or 8-4 staff with the porters and students acting as a team of reserves
who should monitor the up-to-date rota regularly to see if there are gaps
that they are able to fill. It was also agreed during the meeting that everyone must make phone contact with their partner at the start of each period of cover so that they are sure that both are available to respond and know where each other is located. It was also decided that it’s no longer required to phone the university switchboard whenever signing on with control. |
|
| Thursday 29/05/08 | During a meeting of the university's Health & safety policy Committee it was decided that in future the Safety Office would fund the ongoing expenses of running the First Responder scheme in the university. | |
| Friday 16/05/08 |
University responders are given the opportunity to spend a shift with a paramedic crew – staying with them in an ambulance station and accompanying them in an ambulance on calls. |
|
| Monday 12/05/08 | Steve Roberts announces that the details of all first responders in Wales are being entered into a central database. Every PIN will therefore be unique from now on (previously each region had its own PIN series). With this database Steve Roberts will be able to complete a structured training package for each responder - this will help him concentrate on making sure we all get the required amount of training annually. | |
| Wednesday 14/05/08 | Nursing student Natasha, who is a trained first responder from the South East Wales region, joins the cover rota. | |
| Monday 21/04/08 | Veronyca, Dan, Anthony and Owen received their certificated from Steve Roberts of the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust. Click here to see photos. Click here to see the article on the university website. | |
| Friday 11/04/08 | We go live with the new incident report forms (now also referred to as Patient Clinical Records (or PCRs) next Monday, the 14th April. Guidance on how to complete the form has been sent to all staff responders - students responders need to contact Jerry. | |
| Monday 10/03/08 | Christine, Anthony and Owen join the rota! | |
| Tuesday 26/02/08 | The agenda for next Monday's regular monthly meeting (room 703 LIS @ 1pm) is on the website here. | |
| Wednesday 30/01/08 |
The agenda for the monthly meeting on 4 February 2008 (at
1pm in room 703 LIC) can be found
here. Most of our new volunteers have now received their CRB clearance certificates - their ID cards and PINs will follow shortly. As soon as all have been cleared they can join the rota. A request was submitted to the university SMT for extra funding to purchase a practice AED and manikin for training was submitted at the end of 2007. Unfortunately, with Peter Townsend retiring and Phil Gough taking over it has been overlooked. Jeremy has raised the issue again with Phil and hopes to get the funding soon. New Incident Report forms - Steve Roberts has sent a new incident report form for us to look at and pass comment. New Equipment Check Lists - Steve has also supplied these, but there are logistical difficulties in using them at the university. |

| Monday 03/12/07 |
New phone – This is not a tetra phone, it’s a
TETRAFIX phone which works with GPS. A trial using the new phone starts in
the Newport/Gwent/Knighton area this week so the roll out will not now take
place until well after Christmas. I’ve asked Steve Roberts which network it
uses but he doesn’t know. My initial reaction is that it is unlikely to
solve our coverage problem on the campus. Steve Roberts’ job – Andrew Vaughan has resigned as first responder officer and Steve is being interviewed for the job (that he has being doing anyway for the past two and a half years!). If he gets it we should see more stability in the future planning for first responders in our area. Access to halls – The halls are run by Gwalia so our staff cards will not open their Salto locks (they’re a different sort of lock). If you need access to any of the halls please ring the porter in Preseli hall on ext. 4653 - note that there will not be a porter there 24/7. If he is there he will have keys and cards to all external and internal locks in all the halls. Hygienic handrub gel – As part of the drive against MRSA all health workers are required to keep this on their person and use it when dealing with patients. University first responders are invited to pick up their pocket-size bottles from Jerry and sign for them. A bottle will also be put in each of the bags. New incident report forms – Prototype expecting soon. Jerry will distribute them for comment. Lifepak 500 AED – This AED (from the kit in the Vivian tower) has been temporarily replaced with a loan AED while it is updated with the new protocol. The original should return within a week.
Training AED & CPR manikin - Jerry has written to
the SMT requesting extra funds to purchase these items. |

| Wednesday 14/11/07 | James joins Ross as our second undergraduate student in the team and will take his place on the cover rota during term times. | |
| Monday 29/10/07 | Seven new volunteers (plus one for the Pennard scheme) finish their initial training today. Once their CRB checks have been completed, their ID cards issued and other associated paperwork ratified they will take their places on the rota. | |
| Friday 12/10/07 | Reminder: Refresher Course on Monday 22 October 9am to 5pm in room 703 of the LIC. | |
| Thursday 11/10/07 | We have a new member in the team! Ross Whitehead. Ross is a 2nd (?) year undergrad who is also a member of the Rhondda Cynon Taff First Responders. He is fully trained and experienced and will cover the Thursday PM slot (usually with Jane) during term times. Ross will also join us for the refresher course on the 22nd - so you'll have an opportunity to meet him and a number of the Pennard team. | |
| Thursday 12/04/07 | Three cabinets have been installed inside the entrances to Fulton House (to the right of the porters' desk), the Vivian Tower (on the right as you enter the east entrance) and the Library (about 20 feet inside the staff entrance on the left). They are all two-tone blue in colour. Extra keys have been cut ready for issue to all first responders and building porters. All that we need now are the extra supplies from the ambulance service to fully stock the 2 additional kits and we can install all the kits in the cabinets!! | |
| Tuesday 13/03/07 | Problems with the cupboards! They were ordered with identical locks so that one key would fit all of them, but have turned up with 3 different locks. ARHH! The supplier is sorting out the problem - watch this space... | |
| Monday 12/03/07 | The cupboards have arrived. These will be securely located in key positions around the campus and extra keys will be ordered. The extra supplies for the 2 new kits have not yet arrived from the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust - who are being chased! | |
| Monday 26/02/07 | The group meeting scheduled for 9th March has been cancelled. The meeting scheduled for Monday 7th May has been rescheduled for Tuesday 8th May (as 7th May is a Bank Holiday). All the other meetings throughout 2007 will take place on the first Monday of each month at 1pm in room 703 of the LIC tower. | |
| Wednesday 21/02/07 | Additional oxygen cylinders, airways, masks etc, ordered from the Welsh Ambulance NHS Trust for the additional 2 FR kits to be sited in key positions around the campus. | |
