Swansea University First Responders

Minutes of the meeting held on 6th August 2007 in the LIC, room 703

Present: Jerry, Nathalie, Katrina, Diane, David, and Jane

1 Minutes of previous meeting (2nd July 2007)
These were accepted as a true record. No amendments were submitted.

2 Matters arising
Phone coverage problems: Jerry has spoken to Pete Deacon who felt that using DECT phones would not provide better coverage. Instead he suggested a new technology phone which uses both mobile phone frequencies and land lines. However, this is untried in the university so LIS are considering trialling one such phone. Pete recommended waiting until the outcome of this trial was known.

VC's Cutting Edge list: No progress. - ACTION: JERRY

Training: Covered later.

Eligibility to operate: Steve Roberts has confirmed that we can still operate as we are, even though we are overdue refresher training.

30:2 meetings in SDU: Some confusion here and no definite answer as to whether first responders can attend for CPR practice.

3 Calls since the last meeting
Just one call has been received since the last meeting. David explained the circumstances of the call. Interestingly, he and Geraint attended alongside the departmental first aider who has already started treating the casualty by the time they arrived.

4 Refresher training
It was agreed that we would opt for 1 x 8 hour session, rather than the 2 x 4 hours sessions preferred by Pennard, for our annual refresher training and that Jerry would endeavour to arrange this some time during September.  Those who wish to attend the Pennard session on Saturday 18th August, from 9am to 1pm in the back room in the community hall are still welcome to do so.

5 Scenario
Due to lack of time this was postponed.

6 AOB
David and Nathalie explained the circumstances of the manning and communication problems a couple of weeks ago. It was agreed that Jerry should remind all responders to inform him well in advance of planned absence and contact him or the switchboard when short term problems arise. He would also recommend that the switchboard always has the rota web page available for reference so that they know who is actually on call at any given time. - ACTION: JERRY

7 CPR  practice
A short practice session with Little Annie followed. During the session Nathalie informed us of a recent incident she had attended in Port Talbot which proved to be both interesting and informative. One lesson learned is that conditions in the real world are unlikely to be as clinical as they are in training!
