- Be sure to follow the
DRABCD procedure
- Introduce yourself to a conscious patient and ask for his
name. Tell him that you will look after him until the paramedics arrive
- Assess the patient's condition (see
Signs & symptoms)
- Ask the patient if he's on medication, and if he is
make a note of it. If appropriate help him take the medication
- Give oxygen as appropriate (see details
here)
- If the patient is unconscious but is
breathing (look, listen & feel for 10 seconds) insert an
oralpharyngeal airway
(if possible) and place him in the
recovery position
- If the patient is unconscious and is not
breathing insert an
oralpharyngeal airway
(if possible) then
set up
and switch on the
AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), and
commence
CPR. Follow
the prompts from the AED and only shock if prompted to do so.
