Swansea University First Responders

Minutes of the meeting held on 3 August 2009 in the LIC, room 703

Present: Jerry, Christine, Diane, Jane

Apologies: Mike

1 Minutes of August meeting (6 April 2009)
Accepted without amendments or changes.

2 Matters arising
  None.

3 Calls received
There have been 7 calls since the last meeting; a lower call rate than Pennard, who are receiving just under one call per week on average. Luckily the calls had mostly been attended by those present in the meeting so we were able to review them. We have still been getting calls from people other than ambulance control, usually the switchboard, but on occasions university staff. Also, occasionally bystanders are not being sent to the building entrance to meet the FRs and paramedics. Switchboard staff have been reminded that emergency calls must be put through to ambulance control (999) who will task the university FRs directly should the AMPDS code be suitable. However, there are temporary staff working in the switchboard at the moment so the odd glitch may still occur.

4 Forum Report
Jerry gave a verbal report of the forum:
1 The ambulance service will use specialist skills of FRs who are doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc
2 Such FRs will receive "train the trainer" type training and give refresher courses to FRs
3 Once Terrafix radios are fitted in ambulances the GPS phones will be cascaded to FRs (university scheme won't get one)
4 Steve Roberts will continue to give initial training
5 Possible volunteers manning a dedicated FR desk in Carmarthen control
6 Still unable to travel on ambulances because of legislation
  7 Very little money around!

5 Swine Flu
There was a short discussion about what actions we should take if we suspect that a casualty has swine flu. Other than putting a mask on the patient (which has to be removed if oxygen therapy is required) it was felt that there's not much else that can be done.

6 Training
Refresher training will have to wait for the new trainers (see above). Jerry has requested initial training from Steve for potential new members but as yet nothing has been arranged.

7 Any other business
7.1 Jerry will try to set up a visit to ambulance control in Carmarthen.
7.2 Diane wondered whether university FRs could attend manual handling (i.e. patient handling) courses given by the school of Health Science. Jerry to check.
