Swansea University First Responders

Minutes of the meeting held on 1 February 2010 in the LIC, room 609

Present: Jerry, Mike, Katrina

Apologies: Jane, Iain

1 Minutes of August meeting (7 December 2009)
Accepted without amendments or changes.

2 Matters arising
2.1 No news re AMPDS code changes.
2.2 Confirmed that 7 new volunteers will undergo training 22nd to 25th February.

3 Calls received
Five calls have been received since the last meeting. Where possible those who attended explained what had happened during the calls. There certainly appears to be a link between the frequency of calls and the onset of exams. Stress is probably a major contributory factor. Diane's call on 27th January also highlighted the state of some of the back entrances/exits to lecture theatres and she has raised this with Sue Davey, cleaning manager.

4 New staff handbooks
Mike and Jane were given a copy each of the Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Staff Handbook and Jerry briefly ran through the procedure required to log training progress. Throughout the handbook there are questions, designed to ensure that readers have understood what they've just read. The answers to many of these questions can be found at the end of section 4b. At the end section 1 there are forms, some of which are applicable, to be completed by each team member and by Jerry. After section 4e there's a LEARNING LOG which, where applicable, needs to be ticked and signed off by Jerry. Section 5 does not seem to be applicable to First Responders but rather to Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust employees only.

ALL members of the university First Responder team have to receive one of these handbooks, complete the training therein and have it signed off by Jerry. Those members not present at the meeting must pick up their copy from Jerry at the earliest possible convenience.

5 Skills audit
During the First Responder forums in Cefn Coed last year there were discussions about gathering information about the additional skills that first/co responders have other than the first responder training (and first aid training), e.g. qualified nurse, doctor, St Johns etc. In time it's hoped that such individuals will be allowed to practice their additional skills whilst operating as responders - currently they are not! Jerry has been asked to identify to Steve Roberts anyone with such an additional skill base and issue them with a form to complete. There is only one such member within university responders: Cathy. Jerry has completed the necessary paperwork which has been returned to Steve.

6 Any other business
Jerry expressed disappointment at the poor turnout. All meetings and training sessions recently have been poorly attended which may mean there's a case for reducing them to bi-monthly.

7 Date of next training session and business meeting
Note: There will be no meeting in March as Jerry will be absent.
Business meeting:- Monday 12 April 2010 @ 1.00 pm in room 703.
  Training session:- Monday 10 May 2010 @ 1.00 pm in room 703.
